Intersection: Representing Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Stalking in Complex Cases
May 19-21, St. Anthony Hotel, San Antonio, TX
The ASISTA technical assistance on immigration assistance to immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and trafficking, in partnership with the United States Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (“OVW”) will host a three-day Intermediate/Advanced training on May 19-21, 2008 in San Antonio, TX. This three-day training will provide attorneys who represent victims in complex cases with an opportunity to develop and improve their expertise in the representation of victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and trafficking. Registration is limited to current Legal Assistance for Victim (LAV) grantee attorneys of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women (“OVW”). Registration will be limited to 25 participants each for the intermediate and advanced tracks, and is on a first come, first served basis. There is no registration fee to attend the Institute and grantees may use OVW funds to cover travel costs to attend. Please look for more information and registration information soon.

IMMIGRATION REMEDIES FOR IMMIGRANT
SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC ABUSE AND OTHER CRIMES

This two-day training will
review the various immigration remedies available to immigrant
survivors of domestic violence and other crimes, including
self-petitioning under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA),
inadmissibility grounds and waivers, cancellation of removal under
VAWA, motions to reopen for VAWA benefits, conditional residency
waivers for abused immigrants, U and T visas and special immigrant
juvenile status. The new regulations for U nonimmigrant status
including the eligibility requirements and application procedures
will be discussed. The trainers for this program are CLINIC
attorneys Susan Schreiber and Helen Chen. An application for
Illinois CLE credit has been approved.
